HALLOWEEN CELEBRATE|2022

“Halloween” has Christian roots and is derived from the Scots term “All Hallows’ Eve,” which refers to the night before Halloween.

On October 31, people around the world observe Halloween, also known as All Hallows’ Eve or All Saints’ Eve. It is observed in honor of the deceased, saints, martyrs, and souls who have left this world.

The day before All Hallows Day, which is commemorated on November 1st, All Souls Day, which is observed on November 2nd, and All Hallows Eve are collectively known as All Hallow tide. They specifically pray for the souls of the dead to enter Heaven on this day.

Halloween celebrations have been a tradition since approximately the fourth century, and they have spread to numerous locations throughout the globe while taking local conditions into consideration. As they evolved into holy days of obligation in the 13th century, they adopted customs like ringing the bells and baking and exchanging cakes, which gave rise to a new ritual known as TRICK OR TREAT.

HOW DOES TRICK OR TREAT WORK?

Trick or treating is a fun Halloween event for children. On that day, children dressed in Halloween costumes go door to door and ask residents, “Trick or Treat?” The trick in this situation puts residents in risk if they don’t comply with the request. Trick or treating with people typically involves receiving a variety of candies like Skittles, M&Ms, Kit kat, Musketeers, etc. As a reward, a few freshly heated cupcakes are distributed. They offer a variety of sweets. Additionally, you can learn more from the book “The Book of Hallowe’en,” which was written by American historian and curator Ruth Edna Kelley. Guising is also practiced in Scotland.

HALLOWEEN COSTUMES

Children wear Halloween costumes during trick-or-treating. The tradition of dressing up for Halloween may have its roots in the notion that at this time of year, ghosts, goblins, and other supernatural beings roamed the earth. According to a newspaper article, this tradition started in North America in 1911. Costumes are typically those of monsters like vampires, werewolves, zombies, ghosts, skeletons, witches, trolls, savages, fiends, etc., or in later years, sci-fi-inspired characters like outsiders and superheroes. There are other attires for prominent members of society, such as presidents, rivals, well-known individuals, or celebrities from literature, television, film, etc. On Halloween, little kids typically dress up as completely adorable figures such as princesses, Snow White, pixies, heavenly messengers, cute animals, and flowers.

The annual New York City Halloween March began in 1974; it is the largest Halloween march in the world and the only important evening march in America, bringing more than 60,000 costumed participants, 2,000,000 spectators, and a large television audience.

A variety of Western Christian groups encourage vegetarianism on Halloween Eve, which results in a variety of vegetarian meal options for this day.

The following are a few well-known Halloween costumes:

  • Witch
  • Fairy
  • Cowboy
  • Clown
  • Scarecrow

A TREATS APPLE

Since Halloween falls immediately after the annual apple gathering in the Northern Hemisphere, sweet apples (also known as toffee apples outside of North America), caramel apples, and taffy apples are common Halloween treats made by drenching whole apples in a sticky sugar syrup and occasionally adding nuts.

JACK-O-LANTERNS

Halloween traditions like carving pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns originated in Ireland and spread to the US with Irish immigrants who practiced cutting root vegetables.

In order to create a jack-o-light, the topmost portion of the pumpkin or turnip is chopped off to form a top, the interior tissue is removed, and the outside skin is then peeled back to reveal the hollow interior. However, jack o’ lanterns are easily available in places like Walmart and Target. To create the light look, a light source—typically a fire or tealight—is placed inside before the cover is closed.

What happens to your family’s jack-o-lanterns after Halloween? An old jack-o-lantern was perfect for teaching the kids about the progression of pumpkin deterioration, just as natural substances go through a lifespan before being separated in the afterlife. Most years, we just throw them away.
